Choose your surfboard
What is my surfing level?
If you're a beginner and you don't have the necessary automatisms to master the board and the spot is overcrowded, don't hesitate : it's a foam board that you need ! For the rest, Epoxy resin or polyurethane board, thermo-molded plastic it's up to you but it's hard, it breaks and it can hurt ....
What is my size : shrimp or whale?
It takes everything to make a world! The important thing is to be aware of this and to choose your board objectively and reasonably according to your weight and size. We sincerely believe that everyone can have an aquatic gliding experience. The evolution of equipment and surfing pedagogy offers everyone the possibility to try surfing, but not necessarily to become a surfer... Generally speaking, the size of the board is proportional to the size of the surfer in relation to his or her level: the taller, heavier, softer and more experienced the surfer, the more your board will resemble an ocean liner (long, wide and thick). On the other hand, the wafer will be for the small, light, toned and technical surfer, who doesn't have a bad back. Choosing the right tool favors success and allows to access the pleasure of sliding.
The choice of the spot : observation of the environment and the wave conditions of the day
The beach breaks of Seignosse or Hossegor in the Landes are world famous. In France and in the world, each wave is unique and its breaking depends on variable parameters such as the state of the tide, the orientation and the strength of the wind, the direction, the speed and the power of the swell and finally the nature of the bottom. These diverse conditions are part of the magic and difficulty of surfing. The surfer must in essence know how to adapt, the same goes for his equipment.
Generally speaking:
- Small waves + small surfing level = big board
- Small waves + big surfing level = small board
- Big waves = good surfing level + big board or good surfing level + small board + jet ski
Internet and webcams allow almost to observe the spot in real time : good or not good?
Which dream for which reality : state of mind and surfer's philosophy...
The right balance, like in life...
Once you have answered the above questions, you will have to find the right compromise between shape, length, width, thickness of the board, number of fins, shape of the tail, etc... in order to ensure your board's maneuverability, speed and radicality or rather stability and comfort.
